To the Coaches of the NW Section

May 7, 2009

As discussed at our last business meeting on March, 11th, 2009 at the King County Aquatic Center, a task force was formed to pursue ideas that could help to enhance our NW Section meet.  The task force was successful in generating some thoughtful ideas, and has provided us with the following suggestions for the summer of 2009:

  • Retain the current time standards.
  • Remove all bonus swims.
  • Raise the number of time trials from two to three.

Please also keep in mind, that these changes will take effect for the 2009 SUMMER MEET ONLY.

Due to the fact that these changes must be voted on by our Section between our bi-annual business meetings, the Section officers as well as the task force have crafted the following procedures and guidelines in order to vote PRIOR to this summer’s meet.

  • Email voting will begin May 1st, 2009 and will remain open until the beginning of the entry period May 15, 2009—12:00 a.m. PST (one vote per team).
  • The pros and cons of this motion have been provided by the task force for your review.
  • Electronic debate is encouraged and may be done so by simply hitting the “reply all” to this email.
  • Because these are extraordinary circumstances, a quorum of 70 votes is required. This represents half of the teams that attended the Spring Section Meet.
  • A simple majority is required to carry this motion.
  • Votes must be emailed to our Secretary, Jeff Gudman: jgudman7150@msn.com, by May 15, 2009—12:00 am PST, to be counted. Votes will be counted by the Sectional Secretary and verified by the Chairman. Please send Jeff your vote indicating either, “yes” or “no”. A “yes” vote will pass the motion, a “no” vote will reject it.
  • You will receive an email on May 18, 2009 informing you of the outcome of the vote.
  • If a quorum of 70 votes is not achieved, the suggestions of the task force will default for debate at the summer meeting. As a reminder, this meeting is scheduled to be held at 1 pm on Tuesday, July, 21, 2009—one hour PRIOR to the general meeting.

Please also include your name as well as the name of your club.

Listed below are the pros and cons of the motion according to the task force. Pease be aware, the outcome of your vote MAY CHANGE the format of the meet. Thank you in advance for your participation.

Western Region Section Vote per recommendation of Times/Meet Format Task Force:

Motion: Task Force recommends for 2009 Summer (LCM) we retain current qualification times for but remove all bonus swims. In addition, the number of time trials shall be raised from two to three.

-This is only for 2009 summer meet only- not Spring
2005 Spring SCY-       844                  2005 Summer LCM-   689
2006 Spring SCY-       ???                  2006 Summer LCM    840

2007 Spring SCY-       890                  2007 Summer LCM-   790

2008 Spring LCM-      701                  2008 Summer LCM-   816
2009 Spring SCY-     995
2009 Summer LCM-

ALL TIMELINES ARE CALCULATED ON A ZERO SECOND INTERVAL

-This assumes well-executed chaser starts throughout session (i.e. best case scenario)

2006 Summer Prelim Timelines-
840 athletes- 792 out of 3711 entries were bonus swims (approx 21%)
Wed 4:19        Thu 4:48         Fri 5:29

2007 Summer Prelim Timelines-

2008 Summer Prelim Timelines-
816 athletes-505 out of 3523 entries were bonus swims (approx 15%)
Wed 4:01        Thu 4:03         Fri 5:02

2009 Summer LCM
Factors to consider:

  • With current number of bonus swims the threshold of athletes appears to be between 850-875 athletes that will force prelims into an A/B Flight format.
  • PNS Championships are being held on the same dates as the summer Sectional meet at Federal Way, WA.
  • There were several major teams that did not attend the 2009 SCY Spring Sectional that will be attending this summer (Spring Sectional had 995 athletes)

Cons

  • Motion reduces number of swims in the meet for entry level swimmer.

Pro

  • Motion responds to the growth of qualifiers within the Section
  • Motion attempts to prevent A/B Flight prelim sessions
  • Motion does not make qual times faster
