More Very Important News about 11 and Over Championships

July 24, 2005

A Decision was made on the Meet Format for Oregon Swimming, Inc.
2005 Speedo Long Course 11 and Over Age Group Championships, July 28 through 31, 2005
1. Meet entries total 738 athletes from 48 teams participating in 2,989 individual swims and 538 relays. The original meet format and unexpectedly high number of entries would have resulted in excessively long preliminary and finals sessions. A number of coaches expressed significant concern over the length of the meet and impact on swimmers and parents. A number of suggestions were offered.
2. Meet Referee, Howard Jones; Administrative Referee, Jackie Allender; Age Group Coaches Chair, Lissa Parker; and OSI Registration Chair, Coby Van Andel met by conference call on July 23 to reach a decision on changes to the meet format to address the length of the meet. OSI President, Tim Stevenson; OSI 1st Vice President, Rick Guenther; and Senior Coaches Chair, Kyle Kimball were not able to participate.
3. Decisions:
a. All events will be swum as timed finals.
b. All heats of 1500 and 800 meter freestyle events will be swum 2 swimmers to a lane with manual timing. Every attempt will be made to provide for 3 watch times per swimmer. In general, one boy and one girl will be the two swimmers in each lane to allow timers and officials to more easily identify the swimmers. The heats will be swum fastest to slowest.
c. Time permitting, time trials will be held at the end of the Friday and Saturday sessions. Swimmers (including relay only ) will be limited to a maximum of one time trial. This is subject to not exceeding the 3 event limit per day.
d. Two to three short warm up/cool down breaks have been added to the Friday – Sunday sessions and will appear on the final timeline.
4. It is not anticipated that any further changes to the meet format will be considered.
